Paul Edward Tay

Paul Tay is noted for his stellar Mid-Century Modern residential designs, which include SIgnal Hill's Sipprelle Residence, as well as his distinctive office and compound on Crest Drive in Long Beach.

Born in Pomona in 1924, Tay began his architectural career in Long Beach in the late 1940s. Tay graduated from USC in 1950 and counts Harwell Hamilton Harris and Frank Lloyd Wright as early inspirations. He opened his practice in Long Beach soon after graduation and conducted a healthy career designing many residential projects in the Southern California area. Before relocating in 1971 to Mendocino, where he is still in practice, Tay designed more than 30 residences in the Long Beach area, including the Sipprelle Residence.

Tay's Mid Century Modern designs are characterized as "ranch modernism," and his work is notable for distinctive shapes and expanses of glass which merge with the landscape. In the 1950s, this architecture mode began as a way of life before it was adopted as a style.
